The Rolling Stone Top is a song chart that ranks popular songs from today's most popular artists. Songs are ranked by Song Units, a number that combines audio streams and song sales using a custom weighting system. The song chart does not include any passive listening, such as terrestrial or digital radio. The Rolling Stone Top Song chart is updated daily, and each week Rolling Stone finalizes and publishes an official version of the chart, covering the seven-day period ending with the previous Thursday.

A song may have any number of elements that make it a great song, such as emotion, melody and longevity. A song may be popular at one time and not another — likes and preferences in music change throughout the lifetime of a song. Popular songs are vast and diverse, and tastes are subjective. You know when you hear a song for the first time and the sights and sounds and feeling of that moment stay with you? Songs included here may or may not have been popular hits — but all have elements that make them great songs. The year of release determines the first chart entry date. From July to December , the 10 most popular songs were ranked based on the top downloaded songs from online music retailers.
"Best of" Lists
The following list could be a maelstrom, considering the subjectivity of the category. I've decided to base the list on songs that work out of context — a tall order given Sondheim's mastery of crafting music and lyrics specifically tailored to the characters and situations within his musicals. That means many of his greatest songs are too tied to those characters and situations to be enjoyable outside those contexts, and therefore are ineligible for this list. This also tends to eliminate bigger production numbers or e duets, although some of those made this list. The music evokes a particular movement in pop culture, perfectly embodying it while simultaneously turning it on its head — in this case the girl groups of the Andrews Sisters era. The lyrics make use of this almost dizzily bouncy, almost deliriously cheerful aesthetic to disarm the listener in a monologue that is first fun, then cutting, and surprisingly vulnerable.
